Designer Interview: Soumya Jain (drinkdesign)

July 25th, 2010 Shashaank No comments

Continuing with our designer interview initiative – this week we present to you one of DesignChord’s most active members - Soumya Jain a.k.a drinkdesign, as many might know him. Drinkdesign is amongst the top designers on Design Chords and already has  3 winning designs under his name. He lives and works in Jaipur, India.

1. Tell us something about yourself

Hello, mSoumya Jainy name is Soumya Jain. In high school I was a scholar of physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics. Soon I realized that my interests were elsewhere.  I graduated in communication design (Graduate Diploma in Communication Design) from the Symbiosis Institute of Design, Pune, India. During the college days, I worked on many projects as a freelancer and travelled across the country to attend seminars and workshops to acquire the in depth knowledge of the field.

Since then I have been working as a freelancer actively and now have started my own design studio, ‘drinkdesign’ in Jaipur.

2. How is the design industry in India?

Design industry in India has immense scope. I feel India still is an untapped design resource. From her ancient history to the modern culture, from the beautiful villages to her various religions, you can find design everywhere.

Design industry in India is growing rapidly as more and more people have started to realize the importance of design. Designers as a result are also becoming more mature and responsible.

However, design community in India, I feel, is competition driven. Everyone is trying to overpower each other, which in turn is hampering quality and innovation. Design scene in India is still growing and is not on the level of ‘competing’. I strongly feel designers in India should be more ‘collaborative’ then competitive.

3. What challenges do you face as a freelance designer?

Working as a freelancer has its own pros and cons. The biggest challenge, I think, is to satisfy the “ethical you”. There is always a good chance of compromising on the quality of your output, to do everything you learned NOT to, and it’s the easy way too. But you have to stick to your ethics.

Challenge that you will face working as an online freelancer is to understand the need of the client. To deliver good results you have to completely understand the client as a person, which goes lacking in many cases. To ensure this, you have to communicate as much as possible with the client (g-talk is a good option).

As a freelance designer, you also need to manage your time properly. Use reminders (post its), set up a schedule, make your workplace more professional (preferably not your living room) and remain inspired.

4. What factors influence your designs/ your inspiration behind designing?

You can get inspiration walking on the road, traveling in a train, reading the morning newspaper, watching television, listening to music, just about anywhere.Pac man

All you have to do is keep your eyes and mind open. Observation is the key.

Apart from that, I am a regular follower of design blogs and forums, which keeps me updated to modern trends and happenings in the field of design. To list out a few- Design Observer, The 99percent, TED talks, design21, graphic-exchange, Indian by design, Design in India, Positive Space blog, FFFFound, The Dieline, deviantart and PDF mags.

5. Any favourite designs and why?

It’s a cliché, but it has to be Apple. One of the reasons may be because I relate to its simplicity and usability. It is the benchmark inapple-logo the field of design, may it be Graphic design (with its awesome brand promotion and typefaces) or Product design (no need to tell about its simple, innovative and beautiful products such as iPod, iMac, Macbooks, iPhone..) or User Experience design (Its easy to use and aesthetically appealing interface).

You just cannot Not fall for it. Simple and smart.

6. What is your approach when you are presented with a design brief from the client?

As I said earlier, you have to understand the need of the client, I try to understand client’s mindset and aspirations by giving them an elaborate questionnaire before starting on any project. I also communicate with them frequently, try to meet them over coffee or if age is not a barrier, I prefer online communication too. Also I always try and go through the online history of the client, analyze his social presence, its always beneficial.

utkarsh

After that, it’s the normal process of research, concept development, editing and finalizing. One important thing is to maintain records of all the conversations with the client for reference. If possible, get the important steps of your process approved manually by the client.

7. What tools do you use for designing / any recommendations?

I live with an iMac, a windows laptop, a high resolution camera, adobe creative suit, a good color printer, a set of drawing pencils, sharpie and stabilos, sketch pad, post its, a white board, small printer, a high speed internet connection and my collection of music.

There is nothing like a “right” set of tools. You build your own comfortable workspace through the course of time. But I would surely like to recommend an iMac for its performance, look and feel, printer friendliness and the beautiful screen.

8. Your favorite designs from your own portfolio (with some background on those designs)

Apart from my love for conventional graphic design like identity and stationary design, I love doing Poster design. Over the years I have done many poster designs for clients as well as for self. It is one of the larger formats in paper print design, which gives you freedom of expression and space.

Here you can view some of my poster design work

9. Anything you want to say to Design Chords creative community?

Design chords is a great effort bringing together designers all across India. I have been active on international freelance platforms and always felt a need for a good platform for India.

I hope it grows out to be a quality driven and valued designer and client network.

Thanks

Soumya jain

Winner of DesignChords Business Cards

March 17th, 2010 Shashaank No comments

Hello

We have finalised the winning design for our business cards. The design is by Smriti K -

DC_0

We really liked the vertical structure of the card along with the way the content has been placed. The logo and site catches the, eye, just what we wanted. We might experiment with the background colour to make it suitable for print, will get in touch with the designer.

Some Worthy Mentions

We also liked 2 designs a lot and want to thank the designers for their entry:

Waves_Business Card_0

The colours used are simply gripping and overall the team loved the concept. The issue here was with print cost, it wasn’t coming out to be a cost effective design. Nevertheless kudos to the designer for the wonderful design

Black

The colour contrast used is commendable and how the logo shines out. We would have loved to select thus design as well, but we just had one option. Thanks athensworld for this amazing design.

We also want to thank each and every designer who participated and we appreciate your efforts. We hope to see you all around for our upcoming projects in the future.

Thanks

    Results for Sketch Lounge Logo

    October 6th, 2009 Shashaank 7 comments

    Hello Everyone

We’d like to thank all the participating designers for their wonderful contribution to this pilot project. We were a little apprehensive how many design ideas will be submitted and if we’ll be able to get our word out in the creative community by just using the email medium. But result was much more promising than our expectation. We not only received 98 design proposals, but a lot of them were very unique and piece of great artwork.

Unfortunately we can pick only 1 winning entry (and trust us it was toughhh to just pick 1!).  Below is the winning submission along with some other mentioned designs -

    Winning Design - beenish (http://www.designchords.com/content/corporate-design)

corporate.previewBeenish takes away the 100$ award. The team unanimously loved this design. It is just what we were looking for – simple, corporate touch, elegant and has that look which will make our brand recognizable when present among other logos. There is a feedback element we’d like to discuss with the designer for the final delivery, but overall we have found our Logo.

    Consolation prizes -

    becks (http://www.designchords.com/content/logo-1)

LOGO 1.previewVery straightforward, good communication and nice colours used. The design was amongst the final 3-4 designs we were considering for the Logo. We have a movie voucher from Kyazoonga for the designer.

    HD-Designer (http://www.designchords.com/node/144)

    HD Designer

A very nice and trendy logo. We especially liked the way ‘S’ has been shown inside the L. Simple and elegant design for a logo. Again was amongst our finalist. The designer gets a voucher from Cafe Coffee Day.

    Exception –

We could award the consolation prize only to an Indian designer as the prizes are applicable only in India but we’d like to mention the design by alteredinnovations (http://www.designchords.com/node/138)

sketchloungelogo copy.previewBoth the idea of a pencil depicting the ’sketch’ part and its execution, both are simply brilliant.  This is  was amongst our favourite for the consolation prize, and thus we’re mentioning it here.

    Honorable Mentions

There are a few designs that the team as a whole loved but could not be awarded the winning design (again – picking  just 1 design is too too tough) -

    Pollen brains (http://www.designchords.com/node/126)

sl1.previewWe found the design very artistic – something we would like sketch lounge to stand for as well. Bravo to the designer for the way L has been disguised shape of  pen/brush. Great execution.

    KhyatiBhatia (http://www.designchords.com/node/139)

SL LOGO 1 copyGreat, amazing concept. The idea of a person  at ease, as one should be in a lounge, while he sketches is simply superb. As for the overall design, We wanted to see much improved execution to use as a logo.

    ankitsethi (http://www.designchords.com/content/sketchlounge2)sketchlounge2.preview

Very stylish and yet very simple. Nice work.

    Abhishek (http://www.designchords.com/content/sketch-lounge)

abhiskly.preview The globe representing the WorldWideWeb, and the brushes depicting the creative part are some really nice thoughts put into this. For a logo, wanted to see a little simpler depiction of the same concept – this fitted more of a background or poster design. But again nice idea.

Thank you everyone for the nice design ideas, it was a good brain exercise for us to come up with this list of a Few selected ones. Over the next few days, we’ll be reaching out  to the awarded designers for their details.

Also to bring to your notice, the team is currently working on giving the site a ‘face-lift’ and add-on the remaining basic functionalities like – designer portfolios, tutorials, designs voting, automated project posting etc.

We’re still in initial development and would love to hear from  you guys on what all can be done better, what features should be included on the website that will help the designers raise the bar of the design work and also fetch international client work.Drop your feedback on team@designchords.com, feedback button on the site or even here ;) In the meantime we’ll work on completing the site at the earliest and try to bring in some client work.

    Thank you

    Regards

The statistics after the 31 days of 1st Project

October 1st, 2009 Shashaank No comments

We just wrapped up with our first test Pilot project today on Design Chords – Sketch Lounge Logo 100$ Project.  The project ran for a 31 day period and we got 98 unique entries from 21 designers.. All in all its a pretty good start for us as not only did we receive some great design ideas (and that too plenty of them), we got some valuable feedback from various well wishers. We’ll be declaring the winning design here on the blog on 5th Oct, and we’ll also mention some designs which we won’t be able to buy, but were outstanding. Watch out for that. Over the next month we will be giving the site a face-lift (we know the present design needs some makeover,& we’re working on that) and completing the left over basic features.

THE TRAFFIC STATS: We had a look at the analytics of the site from the time we started the project till it ended. Pretty interesting data to look at  (the hits from our team have been filtered) -

    • We overall had  1193 Visits in the entire month
    • Each person on average viewed 5 pages and spent ~5 minutes on the site (not bad actually, considering we don’t have a lot of pages yet)
    • 1/3 visitor left the site from the homepage itself (pretty bad I admit, we’re working on that)
    • The traffic really dies down on weekends, whereas Monday see a great spur ;-) Guess we all know why.

    Visitors

Geographic Distribution : Geographically, the traffic pretty much came from India and kind of did expect it. We hope the ratio will decrease in the coming months -

    • India – 75.3%
    • USA – 11.4%
    • Singapore – 3.8%
    • Pakistan – 2.4%
    • Brazil -1.3%
    • Australia – 1%
    • We also got some visitors from – Canada, UAE, UK , Switzerland, France, Germany, Finland, China, Indonesia, Ghana, Ireland, Philippines and Portugal

    Countries

Browsers and Operating Systems : Now here is an interesting trend to watch out. We’ve all heard and observed how IE is beingpie sidelined by Chrome and Mozilla, our site’s traffic says the same with Mozilla and Chrome together sharing ~73% of the traffic! Have a look -

    • Mozilla – 45.3%
    • Chrome – 27.5%
    • IE – 21.1%
    • Rest is Opera and Safari ~ 3% each

    pie 2

But apparently Open Source has been able to do the same charm in terms of Operating system, Windows leads the competition and the others don’t even come close -

    • Windows – 90.7% (~68% is XP, 26% is Vista)
    • Linux – 3.8%
    • Mac – 2.4%
    • Symbian – 1.6%

Traffic Source : i.e From where did our visitors reach the site. No surprises here, since we only took the help of mails and facebook the stats prove the same -OS pie

    • Direct Traffic – 63.70%
    • Referring Sites – 33.78% (shared b/w facebook, orkut and twitter)
    • Search Engines – 2.51%

We’ll be more regular here as the development of the site makes headway and will have another post asking for every-one’s suggestions and feedbacks. Leave your comments if you have any thoughts.

    Regards

    Shashaank Shekhar Singhal

    • Direct Traffic 760.00 (63.70%)
    • Referring Sites 403.00 (33.78%)
    • Search Engines 30.00 (2.51%)

Launch of Design Chords – ‘a web crowdsourcing platform’

August 31st, 2009 Shashaank No comments

    Hello everyone

After months of hard-work and sleepless nights, our geographically displaced team finally managed to launch the much awaited - DESIGN CHORDS in ‘apha’ mode. Design Chords is ‘a web crowdsourcing platform‘ which helps organizations with their creative design projects. At Design chords we believe a great innovate design idea can occur to anyone and there should be a medium to capture those brilliant ideas and showcase it to the world. Design Chords does exactly that by crowdsourcing clients design projects to the crowds.

For those who are unfamiliar how crowdsourcing works, here is a brief that might help you understand it -

    1. Clients post the design briefs on www.designchords.com along with the project deadline and the amount of money that will be awarded to the winner(s)
    2. The designer, who can be located anywhere in the world, submit their design ideas to the clients. Clients can give feedback to designers on the submissions to ensure the final design is in line with the client vision.
    3. Once the project time is passed, the client chooses the best design idea that fits his requirement and WE dispatch the full payment to the designer.

Thus as it goes, with designchords companies can actually source their design projects not just to a particular entity but to anyone in the crowd and in return witness potential of creative ideas that come out of this crowd. As designers, they get a great opportunity to work for international clients and build up their portfolio.

Some popular design areas covered by Design Chords are -

    • Logo
    • Graphic designs (stationary, icons, calenders, animated char)
    • Website – uncoded (web pages, launch pages, twitter and blog backgrounds)
    • Advertisement (print, web, flash, viral campaigns)
    • Publications (book / magazine covers)
    • Packaging design
    • Fashion (tees, accessory)

We currently have a 100$ project running for designers which ends on 30th Sep. We really hope this will help kick-start this brand new startup. We’re accepting client projects offline and would love to talk to anyone who wants to know more about this initiative. We are working day and night to introduce further features on the site and make the whole process of executing a project  worth the money spent. Suggestions and feedback on the forums are most welcome

    Thanks

    Design Chords Team
